About Nevada Cardiology Associates

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Over 2 million Americans will suffer a cardiovascular event, such as heart attack or stroke annually. Early detection and treatment have been shown to decrease death and long term disability resulting from such undesirable, and often preventable events.

Nevada Cardiology Associates was formed in 1989 by Dr. Martin D. Schaffer, in an effort to respond to the needs of Southern Nevada residents in meeting their diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Since that time, Nevada Cardiology Associates has become widely acknowledged as a pioneering force in innovative cardiovascular practices. Nevada Cardiology Associates has been recognized by the Andre Agassi Foundation in its Exclusively Las Vegas Project, as a leader in cardiovascular care. The annual Joint California-Nevada Cardiovascular Symposia have been hosted by the physicians of Nevada Cardiology Associates, since April 2002. The current nine member group brings together a wealth of highly qualified and diversely trained cardiologists. Each physician has received advanced fellowship training, in leading nationally recognized programs, in one or more areas of preventive cardiology and health maintenance, cardiac rehabilitation, diagnostic cardiac testing, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, and nuclear cardiac imaging. Their Cardiology Board Certified physicians serve in medical staff leadership positions in local area hospitals and organizations, as well as, conducting ongoing inpatient and outpatient research projects.

Nevada Cardiology Associates provides the full spectrum of comprehensive cardiology services. Heart problems, such as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathy, congestive heart failure, abnormal heart rhythms, and circulatory problems are thouroughly investigated and optimally treated with cutting edge cardiovascular care. Lifestyle changes and risk factor modification are routinely stressed, through their Wellness Center, in an effort to minimize cardiovascular disease progression, and under ideal conditions, to foster disease regression.

Nevada Cardiology Associates utilizes a wide array of advanced noninvasive testing to aid in the prompt diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular problems, including walking and nonwalking stress testing, cardiopulmonary stress testing, nuclear cardiac imaging, echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, vascular testing and heart rhythm monitoring. When further information is needed to precisely pinpoint the nature of an underlying abnormality, invasive cardiac assessment such as cardiac catheterization, intravascular ultrasound, endomyocardial biopsy, and electrophysiology studies may be undertaken. External counterpulsation, a new technique for the noninvasive treatment of angina pectoris, was introduced to southern Nevada, by the group.

Numerous state of the art interventional cardiac procedures, including intravascular ultrasound, balloon angioplasty, coronary atherectomy, intracoronary stent placement, coronary brachytherapy, and implantation of pacemakers, as well as internal defibrillators, may be performed to correct the underlying problem, while being minimally invasive and avoiding open heart surgery.

Nevada Cardiology Associates strives to deliver the utmost in personalized cardiovascular care, emphasizing compassion, friendliness, clear communication, prompt service, and emergency availability. This is accomplished through the commitment and devotion of the physicians and their specially trained and caring support staff. Comprehensive strategic planning is provided to maximize patient benefit, while attempting to minimize risk and the need for invasive procedures.
